Crown Lengthening
Crown lengthening is used to prepare a tooth for restorations, and sometimes can be used to save a tooth that was at once non-restorable. Crown lengthening is often used when there is insufficient space needed for a new crown, gain access to decay below the gum line, or even for aesthetic purposes such as a “gummy smile”.

This is performed by extending the height or size of the portion of the tooth that is visible by reducing gum tissue. If there is insufficient space for a crown, a periodontist will perform a crown lengthening to provide proper stability. When decay or a fracture extends below the gum line, crown lengthening can be used to gain better access for proper treatment.
